President Edgar Lungu has urged Teacher Unions across the country to help teachers build houses before retirement.
The President said this yesterday when he met representatives from the Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia BETUZ in a series of meetings he held at state house.
The head of state implored teacher unions to partner with financial institutions so that the teachers can access funds to buy or build houses.
President Lungu says it is disheartening to see many teachers go into destitution upon retirement because they did not organise shelter when in service.
Meanwhile BETUZ Secretary General Henry Sinkala says that his union is impressed with government’s decision to increase the salaries of teachers even with the adverse economic effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic still looming around.
Mr Sinkala states that this shows that government is committed to improving the livelihoods of its civil servants.
